The buying guide

How to buy used wedding decor without getting burned

Most wedding decor gets used for one afternoon. That makes it one of the easiest things to buy secondhand, as long as you know where to look and what to check.

What's worth buying used

  • Glass: bud vases, cylinders, candle holders, mirrors. Glass doesn't wear out, and it's often sold in sets of 20 to 100.
  • Arches and backdrops: metal and wood frames, often a fraction of new.
  • Signs and easels: welcome signs, seating chart frames, table numbers.
  • Linens and runners: fine if you check for stains and confirm sizes.
  • Lighting: string lights, lanterns, marquee letters. Test them before you pay.

Skip anything that has to be fresh: real flowers, food and favors.

Where to look

  • Facebook Marketplace and local wedding resale groups (search your city plus "wedding")
  • Buy Nothing groups for free pieces from neighbors
  • eBay for decor sold in big lots
  • Thrift stores and estate sales for glassware, frames and cake stands
  • Friends who married in the last two years

Start early

Good finds come and go. Start your list about 9 months out so you can wait for the right price instead of paying whatever is available the month before.

Questions to ask every seller

  • Exact count and size (photos of the whole set, not one piece)
  • Any chips, cracks, stains, rust or missing parts
  • Does it come apart, and does it fit in a car?
  • When can I pick it up, and can I see it working (for lights)?

Paying safely

  • For local pickups, meet somewhere public and bring someone with you.
  • Check the item before you hand over money.
  • Use the site's own checkout when you can. Never pay by wire transfer or gift card.
  • If a deal looks too good and the seller wants payment before you see it, walk away.

Sell it on after

When the day is over, the next couple is looking for exactly what you used. List it within a few weeks, as a set, with clear photos and a count. You can earn back part of what you spent.
